COVID-19 has demonstrated that reliable childcare is essential to the economic well being of our community. The daycare center has been housed in local churches in downtown Harrisonburg for 50 years—first in Asbury United Methodist and currently in Muhlenburg Lutheran Church. While the generosity of the churches has been invaluable, sharing space with other programs has limited our ability to keep pace with community needs. Our wildly successful fundraiser— Dancing With the Stars of the ’Burg— has raised more than $1.2 million since 2010, allowing HRCDCC to acquire a property in downtown Harrisonburg.
The property, located at 44 Federal Street, will meet the needs of today’s programs while providing HRCDCC with the footprint to meet the future needs of our growing community.
Thanks to the community’s support we were able to pay off our building in December 2022. Funds raised have also paid for architectural designs and plans, engineering and site work, commercial kitchen equipment, and asbestos removal. We are excited that construction is underway for the first phase of renovations. With a budget of $1.3 million, this phase will be completed in time to move our current program of 2-5 year-olds into the new building by the start of the 2024 school year.
