The Butterflies Are Coming!
Location: Hess's Back Home on the Farm
A visit to Back Home on the Farm usually comes in October, when we want to pick our own pumpkin or walk the Corn Maze, but June 19-27 from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 to 5 pm on Sundays, for $5 admission, at Back Home on the Farm, it also means close up access to several species of butterflies. The annual fundraiser for the Harrisonburg Rockingham Child Day Care Center is a wonderful experience for children, adults, seniors and photographers.
Twenty four dozen butterflies are released gradually over the nine day event so that there are butterflies in all stages to watch, study, and have on a fingertip or more.
If the weather cooperates there will be some of the Virginia’s state insect, the Eastern tiger swallowtail, as well as black swallowtails, giant swallowtails, red admirals, fritillaries, painted ladies, and of course the popular monarch. Volunteers are available throughout the specially constructed habitat to answer questions and assist visitors in having a butterfly take nectar from a fingertip.
- When: 10 am – 5 pm Monday through Saturday, Sundays 11-5.
- How much: $5 admission to benefit the Daycare. (Groups of 10 or more should call 434-5268 to arrange a time and special rate.)
- Open for Photographers from 9-10 am each day before the general public arrives.
Saturday June 19, 10am-3pm is “Children’s Safety Day” at "The Wonder of Butterflies". There will be Children’s Fingerprinting by the County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Safety activities by the County Fire Department.
The weekend of June 26-27th is “Big Boy Toys Weekend” at "The Wonder of Butterflies" fundraiser. There will be lots of fun “big boy toys” – trucks and other vehicles that draw the attention of boys (and girls), both big and small to look at, learn about, and climb on.
Plan to spend the day at Back Home on the Farm. Along with "The Wonder of Butterflies" fundraiser, there will be cow train rides, and a big playground, including the fun tunnel tube slide. For an additional $1, you can ride the hand-painted, restored carousel or the cow train. Bring a picnic lunch, or purchase food for sale on location.
Lynne and Gary Hess, owners of Back Home on the Farm and Hess Greenhouse, enclose a large area so that the butterflies are contained and have access to carefully selected and arranged plants that provide sweet nectar for the colorful creatures to drink as they go about their work of mating and laying eggs on the plants they prefer as hosts for the emerging caterpillars.
